Crystal Gail Fraser Amplifies Indigenous Voices Through Storytelling
Crystal Gail Fraser, a historian and Associate Professor at the University of Alberta, is dedicated to amplifying Indigenous narratives through her work. Her latest publication, By Strength, We Are Still Here: Indigenous Peoples and Indian Residential Schooling in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, focuses on survival stories from the Gwich’in people, aiming to foster stronger community relationships among Indigenous peoples. Fraser emphasizes that “storytelling is how we understand the world, and many nations hold vast repositories of stories.”
Fraser’s work is a heartfelt endeavor to document the experiences of Indigenous communities in the Northwest Territories, particularly their encounters with Indian Residential Schools. She is recognized as the first researcher to share these critical stories about Indigenous children in Inuvik and surrounding areas, highlighting the absence of federal oversight during a time when missionaries operated without regulation. The survivor testimonies included in her book have provided Fraser with insights she has sought since childhood.
Inspiration from the Past
Fraser’s interest in the subject intensified following the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action in 2015. She stated, “I didn’t know much about this either,” reflecting on her early ignorance regarding the history of Indian Residential Schools in the North. This awareness propelled her to act, leading to the creation of a work that showcases the ancestral strength of the Gwich’in nation and their ability to overcome adversity.
Embedded within By Strength, We Are Still Here is a narrative of resilience, highlighting how communities draw on various forms of strength to foster meaningful relationships during healing processes. In writing this book, Fraser has not only expanded her own PhD thesis but has also learned to connect with audiences as both a writer and an academic.
Self-Care in Trauma Research
As she navigated the complexities of trauma research, Fraser imparted an essential lesson for those engaged in similar fields: “Take better care of oneself while writing stories. Look after yourself and keep things simple.” This advice underscores the emotional toll that such work can take on individuals dedicated to sharing painful histories.
Fraser is committed to respecting the stories she curates, believing they deserve the same reverence as any narrative shared. She encourages learners and community members alike to explore the rich tapestry of stories within all nations, as they continue to unfold.
In addition to her research and writing, Dr. Fraser, who identifies as a Gwichya Gwich’in, offers consulting services through Indigenous Consulting Services Inc.. Her expertise spans scholarly and historical research, decolonial methodologies, and professional development workshops. By engaging with Indigenous communities, she aims to facilitate deeper understanding and collaboration.
Fraser’s work exemplifies the power of storytelling as a tool for cultural survival and understanding, advocating for greater recognition of Indigenous experiences and narratives. In doing so, she not only enriches the academic landscape but also fosters healing and connection within communities.
