Highway 102 Construction in Bedford Aims to Improve Traffic Flow
Construction is set to begin on Highway 102 in Bedford, Nova Scotia, on November 13, 2023, as part of a short-term project aimed at improving traffic flow and safety. The initiative will focus on the southbound off-ramp at Exit 3, which leads to Hammonds Plains Road. The provincial government hopes to minimize traffic disruptions during the six-week project.
The planned upgrades will widen the existing off-ramp to create two distinct lanes for right and left turns. This modification is intended to reduce blind spots for motorists and enhance visibility as drivers exit the highway. According to a press release from the provincial government, the improvements are expected to alleviate frequent traffic congestion in the area.
Fred Tilley, the Minister of Public Works, emphasized the importance of immediate action, stating, “We’re moving on this short-term project to help bring some relief to this busy area faster.” The exit will remain open for the most part, although occasional delays and temporary closures may occur as construction progresses.
The project will commence with initial landscaping and may involve blasting to clear the area. Blasting operations are scheduled to take place between 09:00 and 15:00 to avoid peak traffic times, while paving efforts will be conducted overnight to reduce disruptions for commuters.
Long-Term Vision and Future Improvements
This construction effort is part of a broader initiative launched by the provincial government, which includes a bidding process for consulting services. These services will assist in identifying additional improvements along Highway 102 between exits 0 and 4 within the Halifax Regional Municipality.
The upgrades on Highway 102 are aligned with Atlantic Canada’s Regional Transportation Plan, which outlines strategies for enhancing traffic conditions in the region over the next 20 years. Tilley reassured residents that while planning for the future, the government remains committed to implementing immediate enhancements that will yield tangible benefits in the short term.
As the construction progresses, the provincial government aims to keep the public informed about any changes to traffic patterns and potential delays. This proactive communication is part of the effort to ensure that residents are aware of the improvements being made to their transportation infrastructure.
