An Elgin man has been charged with driving under the influence after a crash involving his SUV in a cornfield on March 14, 2024. Authorities report that when deputies arrived at the scene, the man was seen drinking tequila from an open bottle while still inside the vehicle.

According to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m. near the intersection of Old State and East County Line roads. The vehicle, identified as a 2011 Buick Enclave, was found off the roadway in a cornfield.

Upon arrival, sheriff’s deputies discovered Jose R. Guadalajara, 64, still in the SUV. Paramedics from Sycamore attempted to assist him in exiting the vehicle. During this time, Guadalajara reportedly began to drink from an open bottle of tequila while in control of the SUV.

Guadalajara was subsequently transported to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb for evaluation. He was later released and received a notice to appear in court on multiple charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, and possession of open alcohol as a driver.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding impaired driving and the risks associated with alcohol consumption. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office continues to encourage responsible drinking and safe driving practices within the community.
