Taiwanese Celebrity Chen Bolin Charged in Military Evasion Case
Taiwanese actor Chen Bolin has been charged alongside 11 others in a significant investigation concerning military conscription evasion. The charges come amid heightened tensions between Taiwan and China, which claims the democratic island as part of its territory. Taiwan has been grappling with challenges in recruiting and retaining military personnel, a situation exacerbated by ongoing geopolitical threats.
Military service has been compulsory for Taiwanese men aged 18 and over for decades, with the current mandatory service period set at one year. Deferment is available for those pursuing higher education, but all men are required to complete their service by the age of 36.
According to the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office, two of the defendants allegedly assisted others in faking medical test results, including manipulating blood pressure readings. This was reportedly done by holding their breath or arranging for others to take the medical tests on their behalf. Prosecutors indicated that if convicted, Chen and four other celebrities could face up to 32 months in prison for their roles in the evasion. The remaining defendants could receive sentences of up to 26 months.
The prosecutors emphasized the responsibility of public figures, noting, “They enjoy the social benefits of high media attention and fame, and wield considerable influence over the younger generation. Yet, they deliberately evaded military service, severely deviating from societal expectations of public figures and their civic responsibilities.”
Chen, aged 42, rose to prominence in the region following his performance in the popular 2011 television drama “In Time With You,” which gained significant viewership in China, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. This case marks the latest development in a broader crackdown on conscription evasion, following a previous wave of indictments in June where 28 individuals, including actor Wang Talu, were charged.
As Taiwan continues to navigate its complex political landscape, the implications of this case extend beyond the individuals involved, reflecting broader societal expectations regarding duty and responsibility. The increasing scrutiny of public figures in such matters highlights the importance of civic engagement, especially in a context marked by external threats and a striving for national unity.
