Du Toit Eyes Historic Third World Rugby Award in 2025
Springboks flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit has been nominated for the prestigious World Rugby Men’s Player of the Year award for 2025, positioning him to potentially become only the third player in history to win the accolade three times. Du Toit, who previously won the award in 2019 and 2024, is in contention alongside teammates Malcolm Marx and Ox Nche, as well as Louis Bielle-Biarrey of France.
Historic Context and Competition
Should he secure the award, Du Toit would join rugby legends Dan Carter and Richie McCaw, the only players to have won three times in the men’s category. Both Carter and McCaw are celebrated figures in rugby history, with Carter’s last win occurring in 2015. Du Toit and New Zealand back Beauden Barrett are the only other players to have won the honor twice.
The winner of the 2025 award will be announced on Saturday, heightening the anticipation surrounding this year’s shortlist. Du Toit’s consistent performance, especially in pivotal matches, has solidified his reputation as one of the finest players in the game today.
Recognition Beyond the Men’s Game
In a related announcement, the best women’s player for 2025 was awarded to Sophie de Goede, a goalkicking lock from Canada, following her standout performances in the recent Women’s Rugby World Cup held in England. This recognition highlights the growing prominence of women’s rugby on the global stage.
As the rugby community eagerly awaits the results, Du Toit’s nomination serves as a reminder of his exceptional talent and contributions to the sport. Winning the award again would not only mark a personal milestone for Du Toit but would also further elevate the status of South African rugby on the world stage.
