Sault Ste. Marie School to Undergo $1.3 Million Roof Replacement
A significant renovation project is set to take place at St. Basil Catholic School in Sault Ste. Marie, where a partial roof replacement will cost approximately $1.3 million. This upgrade, which targets the school’s 300 wing, is scheduled for the summer of 2024. According to Dave Coccimiglio, the manager of plant services, the current roof was installed in 1994 and is in need of replacement to ensure the safety and comfort of the over 700 students enrolled at the school.
The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board trustees received this information during a recent board meeting. Coccimiglio highlighted that this roof replacement is one of several planned improvements across the district, indicating a commitment to upgrading facilities for the benefit of students and staff alike.
Additional Projects in the Pipeline
While St. Basil Catholic School’s roof replacement commands the highest budget for the upcoming year, other notable projects are also on the agenda. The most substantial capital project is slated for Our Lady of Fatima in Elliot Lake, where site upgrades will include a new bus bay shared with Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon, with an estimated cost of $1.5 million. Recent improvements at Our Lady of Fatima include the installation of LED lighting and renovations to classrooms, enhancing the learning environment.
Coccimiglio further mentioned that no additional major projects are forecasted for the near future. However, Holy Name of Jesus in Hornepayne is set to receive improvements such as LED lighting and classroom upgrades at an estimated cost of $600,000. Enhancements are also planned for the school’s washrooms and exterior doors, with an audit planned to determine the specific scope of work required.
In another development, the gym floor at St. Mary’s in Blind River will be replaced for $70,000. The English Catholic board has allocated around $700,000 for general school requests and major maintenance expenditures across the district.
As these projects move forward, the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board continues to prioritize the safety and quality of education for its students, ensuring that facilities are well-maintained and equipped for modern educational needs.
