NASA Unveils Stunning Images of Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS
NASA has unveiled a collection of images and videos capturing interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, which was first detected in our solar system on July 1, 2023. This comet, only the third known interstellar object to traverse our solar system, presents a unique opportunity for astronomers and researchers to study materials from outside our cosmic neighborhood. The previous interstellar objects identified were Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019.
The discovery of 3I/ATLAS was made by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope located in Río Hurtado, Chile. The European Space Agency (ESA) noted that the comet’s unusual trajectory raised immediate questions about its origin from interstellar space, a hypothesis later confirmed by astronomers globally. This designation as 3I/ATLAS signifies its status as the third observed interstellar object.
Close Encounter with Earth
In October, 3I/ATLAS made its closest approach to Earth, passing just inside the orbit of Mars at approximately 228 million kilometers from the Sun. The size of the comet is estimated to be around 20 kilometers in diameter, traveling at a speed of 60 kilometers per second relative to the Sun. The ESA confirmed that the comet poses no threat to Earth, as it will not come closer than 240 million kilometers, which is over 1.5 times the distance between Earth and the Sun.
ESA scientists emphasize that interstellar objects like 3I/ATLAS are remarkable due to their foreign nature. While all celestial bodies within our solar system share a common origin, interstellar visitors are remnants from distant planetary systems. They carry vital clues about the formation of worlds far removed from our own.
Insights into the Universe
While it may take thousands of years for humanity to explore planets in other solar systems, comets like 3I/ATLAS provide a tangible connection to the broader galaxy. The ESA commented, “These icy wanderers offer a rare, tangible connection to the broader galaxy — to materials formed in environments entirely unlike our own.” The study of such comets allows scientists to link humankind with the universe on a grander scale.
NASA’s new images were captured over recent weeks and were released following a delay caused by a U.S. government shutdown. A collaborative effort involving 20 mission teams was essential to capture the remarkable visuals of the comet.
One of the images showcases 3I/ATLAS as a bright object at the center, derived from observations by NASA’s PUNCH mission between September 20 and October 3. During this period, the comet was roughly 231 million to 235 million miles from Earth. Its tail is evident as a short elongation to the right, while stars appear as streaks in the background.
Another noteworthy image, taken by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter using its High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on October 2, illustrates the comet’s trajectory along with a scale bar. The L’LORRI panchromatic imager on NASA’s Lucy spacecraft also captured a series of images of 3I/ATLAS as it approached Mars, showing its coma and tail.
The ESA/NASA SOHO mission observed 3I/ATLAS from October 15 to 26, presenting a faint image of the comet as a slight brightening against the backdrop of space. The initial discovery image from July 1 highlights 3I/ATLAS as it was first reported by the ATLAS survey telescope.
As NASA continues to share insights and visuals of this interstellar visitor, the scientific community looks forward to the knowledge that 3I/ATLAS will bring about the nature of cosmic phenomena beyond our solar system.
