Acadia University Finalizes New Agreement with Library Staff and Technicians

Acadia University in Wolfville, N.S., has ratified a new collective agreement benefiting its library staff, laboratory technicians, and administrative assistants. The agreement was finalized following four days of negotiations held in October 2023, with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 2 representing the 87 affected members on campus. The deal was officially ratified on Thursday.

Commitment to Collaboration

Jeff Hennessy, Acadia’s president and vice-chancellor, expressed pride in the negotiation outcomes. In a news release, he stated, “This is the second time this year I’ve been able to say how proud I am of everyone involved in negotiating a new collective agreement.” He emphasized that teamwork is a core commitment within the university’s strategic direction, and the successful conclusion of this agreement reinforces Acadia’s dedication to fostering a supportive work environment for its employees.

Earlier in 2023, Acadia University also ratified its 17th bargaining agreement with its faculty association, further highlighting the institution’s ongoing efforts to engage positively with its staff.

Lucas Evans, chief shop steward for SEIU Local 2, praised the collaborative spirit of the negotiations. “I am incredibly proud of our SEIU team, and our efforts throughout this process,” he remarked. Evans also acknowledged the university’s representatives for their preparedness and willingness to engage in a meaningful dialogue, noting that they signaled a readiness to approach discussions with empathy.
