Raiders Clinch Narrow Victory Over Wheat Kings in Defensive Clash
The Prince Albert Raiders secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against the Brandon Wheat Kings on March 15, 2024, in a closely contested match. This game marked the Raiders’ first outing after a week-long break from competition, providing them with the opportunity to build on their recent home win against the Wheat Kings, where they triumphed 4-1.
Both teams began with an exchange of power plays in the first period. The Raiders faced a penalty for having too many players on the ice, while the Wheat Kings’ Gunner Gleasman was penalized for interference. Despite the Raiders’ attempts on the power play, they were unable to capitalize. The Wheat Kings took advantage of the momentum, scoring at 14:20 when a shot from Dylan Ronald was redirected by Nick Johnson, beating Raiders goaltender Dimitri Fortin.
The Raiders responded swiftly, equalizing just 57 seconds later. Ty Meunier retrieved the puck from the corner and passed to Evan Smith at the blue line. Smith then set up Justice Christensen, whose powerful one-timer, known as the “Juice Bomb,” found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
At the end of the first period, the score stood at 1-1, with shots favoring the Wheat Kings 12-9. The second period saw both goaltenders shining brightly. The Raiders applied pressure, keeping the Wheat Kings in their own zone for an extended period. A notable moment occurred when Christensen’s shot ricocheted off the back wall, leading to an open net opportunity for Daxon Rudolph. However, Wheat Kings goaltender Filip Ruzicka made a remarkable save to deny the chance.
Fortin, too, was impressive in goal for the Raiders, showcasing his skills with a spectacular pad save on a one-timer attempt. He consistently made difficult saves look effortless, effectively controlling rebounds and preventing secondary scoring opportunities.
Justice Christensen was penalized for holding in the period’s final seconds, setting the stage for a penalty kill at the start of the third period. The Raiders successfully neutralized the Wheat Kings’ power play, maintaining the tie going into the final stretch.
The decisive moment came when Jonah Sivertson made a game-winning play at 2:55 of the third period. After a Wheat Kings player collided with a teammate, Sivertson seized the loose puck. He showcased skill and determination as he maneuvered around a defender, faked to his backhand to draw a pokecheck from Ruzicka, and then managed to score while being tripped, marking his seventh goal of the season.
Following Sivertson’s goal, the two teams continued to battle defensively, but the Raiders held their ground, ultimately securing their fifth victory in six games. The final score read 2-1 in favor of the Raiders, with shots on goal finishing even at 35-35.
Dimitri Fortin earned his first career win against the Wheat Kings, delivering one of his finest performances as a Raider. He recorded 34 saves on 35 shots, achieving an impressive save percentage of 0.971 throughout the match.
The Raiders will now return home to face the Medicine Hat Tigers in their next encounter, aiming to build on their recent success.
