Food Bank of Waterloo Region Prepares for Impactful Giving Tuesday
The Food Bank of Waterloo Region (FBWR) is gearing up for a significant event on December 2, 2023, as it participates in the annual nationwide initiative known as Giving Tuesday. This day of charitable giving aims to bolster food supplies during the demanding holiday season. Notably, tech company Open Text has pledged to match all financial donations up to $40,000.
During an appearance on The Mike Farwell Show, FBWR’s CEO, Kim Wilhelm, highlighted the pressing food insecurity issues affecting the region. “Our network partners supported nearly 73,000 individuals right here in Waterloo Region who are facing food insecurity. Among them are approximately 26,000 children living in food-insecure households,” she stated. This statistic underscores the critical need for support within the community.
The challenge of food insecurity continues to grow. Wilhelm pointed out that these individuals relied on food assistance programs over 622,000 times last year, marking a staggering increase of 205 percent since 2019. Such figures illustrate the heightened demand for food resources in the region.
Funding Initiatives and Community Impact
The contributions received on Giving Tuesday will directly support various programs, including the FBWR’s Mobile Pantry. “This year, we are collecting donations to help our Mobile Pantry deliver fresh, frozen, and non-perishable food directly to our neighbours,” Wilhelm explained. Since its inception in 2021, the Mobile Pantry has been active every week, reaching numerous households.
The FBWR aims to collect enough donations this Giving Tuesday to provide 300,000 meals across the region and beyond. Wilhelm emphasized the importance of ensuring food reaches the communities that need it most. “Our feed collaboration program, part of the larger Feed Ontario initiative, saw food producers throughout southwestern Ontario donate 1.2 million pounds of food last year,” she said.
In addition to financial contributions, the Food Bank encourages community members to donate food items. Donations can be dropped off at local grocery stores, fire halls, or paramedic stations throughout the Waterloo Region.
As Giving Tuesday approaches, the efforts of the Food Bank of Waterloo Region and its partners highlight the critical role of community support in combating food insecurity. With corporate backing and the commitment of local residents, the FBWR is poised to make a significant impact during this essential period of giving.
