Green Acres Students Pack Christmas Hampers for Local Families
Grade 5 and 6 students from Green Acres School participated in a community initiative on Tuesday afternoon, packing bags of candy for Christmas hampers at the Brandon-Westman Christmas Cheer Registry. This year, a record 1,710 families in Brandon registered for assistance, a notable increase from the 1,551 families who sought help last year.
The registry is appealing for nearly 200 individuals or groups to adopt a family and provide a Christmas hamper that mirrors what the registry distributes. Interested participants can sign up through the Brandon-Westman Christmas Cheer website, where they will receive a list of items required to fill the hampers.
Community Support and Volunteer Opportunities
In addition to adopting families, the registry is actively seeking volunteers to help deliver hampers within the city on December 17 and 18, 2023. Volunteers began packing hampers on November 27, contributing their time and effort to ensure that families in need have a joyous holiday season.
The involvement of local youth, such as those from Green Acres School, emphasizes the community’s commitment to supporting its members. Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett also joined in the effort, assisting with the packing of hampers alongside volunteer Samantha Falloon. Their participation highlights the importance of community leaders in fostering a spirit of giving during the holiday season.
The increasing number of families seeking assistance underscores the growing need for support in the community. The Brandon-Westman Christmas Cheer Registry plays a crucial role in alleviating this need, providing essential items to families during what can be a challenging time of year.
For those wishing to contribute, the Brandon-Westman Christmas Cheer website provides additional information on how to get involved, including details on items needed for the hampers and volunteer sign-up options. This initiative not only brings joy to families but also strengthens community ties, reminding residents of the power of collective action and generosity during the holidays.
