The Surrey Christmas Bureau is experiencing its highest demand in over 45 years, with record numbers of families seeking assistance this holiday season. According to Karmin Dhindsa, program co-ordinator, the bureau received more than 3,600 applications for support, with 2,400 families qualifying for assistance. This surge in need significantly exceeds previous years’ figures.

In an email sent to local media on December 4, 2023, Dhindsa expressed the urgency of the situation, stating, “We are experiencing the highest need in our 45+ year history.” The bureau is appealing for community support, urging residents to donate resources to help provide grocery support and gifts to families in need. Dhindsa emphasized that every contribution plays a vital role in helping families celebrate the holidays with joy and dignity.

Record Demand for Holiday Assistance

This year’s Toy Depot, located at the former Canadian Tire store off King George Boulevard (13665 102 Ave.), is at the heart of the bureau’s efforts to meet the needs of families in the area. Donations of cash, unwrapped new toys, and gift cards are being accepted at the depot, and interested individuals can also donate online at christmasbureau.com or by calling 604-581-9623.

On November 5, volunteers began the significant task of preparing for the influx of families by moving truckloads of toys, shelving, and supplies to ensure that the Toy Depot is well stocked. As part of the ongoing effort, Dhindsa highlighted a specific need for gifts aimed at teenagers, stating, “We’re looking at makeup products, hair products, and sporting equipment like basketballs and headphones.” Gift cards are particularly appreciated, as they allow teens the opportunity to select items that resonate with their interests.

The community’s response is crucial as the bureau navigates this unprecedented demand. With the holiday season fast approaching, the Surrey Christmas Bureau aims to ensure that all families can experience the joy of the holidays, reinforcing the importance of community support in achieving this goal.

As the bureau continues to prepare for the coming weeks, local residents are encouraged to participate in this effort, ensuring that every family in Surrey can celebrate the season with a sense of belonging.
