Trump Celebrates Opening of Institute Named After Himself
Former President Donald Trump celebrated the inauguration of the newly renamed Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace on March 15, 2024, during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The event coincided with the signing of a peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for the region.
Standing in the “spectacular” facility, Trump expressed his gratitude to the leaders of both nations for their participation. “It’s a great honor,” he remarked, admiring the building’s architecture. He emphasized the importance of the occasion, noting, “It means maybe more because we are here together for the first time ever in this building — brand new beautiful building.”
Despite the building’s recent renaming, it was originally established in 2011 as the United States Institute of Peace, created to foster conflict resolution worldwide. On the eve of the peace signing, the U.S. State Department announced the renaming, stating it aimed to “reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation’s history.” A photo shared by the department depicted Trump’s name prominently displayed on the wall alongside the institute’s original title.
Trump’s administration has actively sought to enhance his image as a global peacemaker, with the former president claiming to have resolved eight international conflicts since returning to office in January 2024. His aspirations to secure a Nobel Peace Prize have been well-documented, and he is currently seen as a frontrunner for a new peace award that FIFA plans to present during the 2026 World Cup draw.
Transforming Washington’s Landscape
The initiative to rename the peace institute is part of a broader trend during Trump’s presidency, marked by his inclination to put his stamp on various institutions in Washington. Earlier this year, he ordered the dismantlement of the U.S. Peace Institute, originally established by former President Ronald Reagan, and transitioned its control to a new entity led by Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
In another notable change, Trump has transformed the White House’s aesthetic, infusing the Oval Office with gold decor and redesigning the Rose Garden. Media reports suggest he plans to replace the entire East Wing with a new $300 million ballroom, which is expected to be named the “Donald J. Trump ballroom.”
The former president’s branding ambitions extend beyond the institute and the White House. Proposals have emerged to feature Trump’s image on a new $1 coin, as well as to name a stadium for the Washington Commanders NFL team after him. A legislative bill has even been introduced to consider adding Trump’s likeness to the iconic Mount Rushmore.
As these developments unfold, Trump continues to assert his influence on the political and cultural landscape of the United States, with a focus on cementing his legacy as a prominent figure in both domestic and international affairs.
