Qatari Leader Highlights Urgency as Gaza Ceasefire Reaches Critical Stage

The ceasefire in Gaza has reached a “critical moment,” according to Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Prime Minister of Qatar. Speaking at an international conference in Doha on March 15, 2024, he emphasized that the ongoing negotiations are crucial as the first phase of the ceasefire draws to a close, with just one Israeli hostage remaining in the hands of militants.

Sheikh Mohammed stated that international mediators, led by the United States, are striving “to force the way forward” for a second phase of negotiations. He clarified, “What we have just done is a pause. We cannot consider it yet a ceasefire.” He stressed that a true ceasefire would require the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces and a return to stability in Gaza, conditions he deemed unmet at present.

Continued Violence Amid Stalled Negotiations

Despite the ceasefire halting extensive fighting, recent reports indicate that over 360 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the truce commenced. On the same day as Sheikh Mohammed’s remarks, two Palestinians died in an Israeli airstrike northwest of Gaza City, according to Shifa Hospital. The Israeli military later confirmed that it had conducted multiple strikes against Palestinians attempting to cross ceasefire lines into Israeli-controlled territory.

The ceasefire began on October 10, 2023, as part of U.S. President Donald Trump‘s 20-point peace plan. This initial phase saw a cessation of hostilities and the exchange of dozens of hostages from Gaza for hundreds of Palestinians imprisoned in Israel. Following this, Israeli officials traveled to Egypt to discuss the return of the remaining hostage’s remains, yet the subsequent phase, which is expected to involve the deployment of an international security force and the disarmament of Hamas, has yet to commence.

Future Uncertain as International Body Expected

Arab and Western officials have indicated that an international body to oversee the ceasefire, potentially led by President Trump, could be appointed by the end of the year. Sheikh Mohammed noted that any upcoming phase should be viewed as temporary. He advocated for broader peace in the region, emphasizing the necessity of establishing a Palestinian state, a goal opposed by Israel’s right-wing government.

“If we are just resolving what happened in Gaza, the catastrophe that happened in the last two years, it’s not enough,” Sheikh Mohammed said, highlighting the complexity of the underlying issues.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, raised concerns about the formation of the proposed international security force, questioning which nations would participate and the command structure that would be established. While Turkey is among the “guarantors” of the ceasefire, Israel has expressed opposition to Turkish involvement.

The conflict, which began with a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant casualties. Israel reported approximately 1,200 fatalities from the initial attacks, while Gaza’s Health Ministry claims that the Israeli offensive has led to over 70,000 Palestinian deaths. The ministry’s figures, which do not differentiate between civilians and combatants, are deemed reliable by the United Nations and other international entities. Israel accuses Hamas of using civilian populations as human shields during the conflict.

As the situation in Gaza remains precarious, the international community watches closely, hoping for progress towards a lasting resolution. The next steps in the peace process will be critical in shaping the future of the region.
