Nova Scotia Business Owner Introduces Unique Mauritian Flavors
A Nova Scotia entrepreneur is bringing the vibrant flavors of Mauritius to Canada through her culinary venture, Mo Gato Mauritian Delicacies. Founded by Tanya Suefna in 2022, the business offers a distinctive menu of Mauritian dishes, enriching the local food scene with tastes from the Indian Ocean island nation.
Upon relocating to Canada, Suefna found herself in a cultural landscape where she encountered a scarcity of Mauritian cuisine. “In Canada, they are very spread out so I was trying to find my home here,” she stated, emphasizing her desire to share her heritage. With no other Mauritian businesses in the region, she recognized a unique opportunity to fill this gap after exploring the local farmer’s markets.
Expanding a Culinary Adventure
Suefna began her culinary journey with a single offering—a strawberry-guava flavored cookie. “From there it’s been a very wonderful adventure,” she reflected. In just a short time, Mo Gato has expanded to over 20 unique flavors. Suefna’s creations reflect the rich tapestry of influences from various cultures, including India, China, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, all of which have shaped Mauritian cuisine.
Her offerings have garnered attention, especially during the holiday season. Natalie Frederick-Wilson, lead of the SPICE program at the Centre for Women in Business, highlighted Suefna’s products, such as “gorgeous” Neapolitan cookies and lamington cakes, as exemplary of the diverse cuisines supported by the program. “More than anything, we are highlighting that throughout the course of the time that we’ve been here, we’ve brought you so many cuisines,” she noted.
The SPICE program is dedicated to assisting female entrepreneurs in Nova Scotia, providing them with the tools needed to build and scale successful food service businesses. Frederick-Wilson emphasized the inclusivity of the program, stating, “If they have an idea, if they are looking to grow and scale a business, we can help them.”
New Offerings and Community Engagement
In 2025, Mo Gato introduced traditional savory dishes alongside its popular sweets. Now, the business features fried noodles and “melt-in-your-mouth” buttery shortbread cookies, which are available through catering services and at various events throughout the region. Suefna also sells her culinary creations every Saturday at the Halifax Brewery Market.
With her innovative approach, Suefna is not only sharing her culture but also contributing to the local economy and community. By participating in the SPICE program and engaging with customers at markets, she is building a network that supports both her business and fellow entrepreneurs.
As Mo Gato continues to thrive, Tanya Suefna remains committed to showcasing the unique flavors of Mauritius, creating a bridge between cultures and offering Nova Scotians a taste of the island’s culinary heritage.
