Mauritian Delicacies Flourish in Nova Scotia with New Business
A unique culinary venture has emerged in Nova Scotia, as Tanya Suefna introduces the flavors of her native Mauritius through her business, Mo Gato Mauritian Delicacies. Established in 2022, the company offers an array of traditional Mauritian dishes and treats, filling a gap in the local food scene.
Initially, Suefna faced the challenge of settling into a new country without the presence of fellow Mauritians. “In Canada, they are very spread out, so I was trying to find my home here,” she shared. Recognizing a lack of Mauritian offerings in her area, she decided to share her culture through food. After exploring local markets, she began selling her first item, a strawberry-guava flavored cookie, at the Alderney Landing market.
A Taste of Mauritius in Canada
Since that initial offering, Suefna has expanded her menu to include over 20 unique flavors of cookies and other culinary delights. Her creations reflect the rich blend of influences found in Mauritian cuisine, which draws from Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, African, and European culinary traditions. “Basically all the countries that settled on the island came together and created this amazing food,” Suefna explained.
The Specialized Program in Cooking Entrepreneurship (SPICE), run by the Centre for Women in Business, has played a crucial role in supporting Suefna’s entrepreneurial journey. Program lead, Natalie Frederick-Wilson, emphasized the importance of showcasing diverse cuisines, particularly during the holiday season. “We are highlighting that, throughout our time here, we’ve brought you so many cuisines,” she noted.
Frederick-Wilson added that the SPICE program is designed for women from all backgrounds who have a passion for food and want to develop their business ideas. “If they have an idea, if they are looking to grow and scale a business, we can help them,” she stated.
Expanding Culinary Offerings
In 2025, Mo Gato further diversified its offerings by introducing traditional savory Mauritian dishes, complementing its sweet selections. The menu now includes fried noodles and “melt-in-your-mouth” buttery shortbread cookies, available through catering services and at various local events.
Every Saturday, customers can find Suefna at the Halifax Brewery Market, where she continues to share her culinary heritage with the community. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many locals eager to experience the unique flavors that Mo Gato brings to Nova Scotia.
As Suefna reflects on her journey, she describes it as “a very wonderful adventure.” Her determination to fill a culinary void and share the tastes of her homeland has not only enriched the local food landscape but also created a sense of community among those who appreciate diverse cuisines. With continued support from programs like SPICE, the future looks promising for Mo Gato and the growing interest in Mauritian delicacies in Canada.
