An Alberta clipper has brought heavy, wet snow to Toronto and much of Southern Ontario, significantly disrupting travel on Wednesday morning. Snowfall began overnight, prompting Environment Canada to issue a snowfall warning that remains in effect. The advisory indicates that conditions will gradually improve, with snow tapering to scattered flurries or drizzle by the afternoon.

Road conditions across the region have become treacherous, leading to approximately 80 reported collisions in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Hamilton since 05:00. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed that there were no serious injuries from these incidents but emphasized the need for caution. They advised drivers to remain attentive, reduce speed, and stay in control.

“Travel will likely be challenging,” stated Environment Canada. “Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.” The agency also warned of reduced visibility at times and urged commuters to allow extra time for their journeys.

In Toronto, some areas received over 10 centimetres of snow during the morning, contributing to a total accumulation of 17 centimetres since Tuesday, according to local weather enthusiasts from Forecast Office Toronto. Images shared on social media from Bradford displayed thick snow accumulation, with snow squalls expected to affect Simcoe County, including Barrie and Wasaga Beach, from Wednesday evening into Thursday.

A snow squall alert issued by Environment Canada indicated that local snowfall amounts could reach between 30 and 50 centimetres, alongside warnings of significantly reduced visibility due to heavy snowfall and blowing snow. “Consider rescheduling travel and outdoor activities,” the advisory said. “Prepare for possible disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities.”

In Kitchener, Rob Kuhn, a meteorologist with Environment Canada’s Ontario Storm Prediction Centre, reported measurements of 16 centimetres of fresh snow in the city. He remarked, “This snow is perfect for snow people.”

Authorities continue to remind highway commuters of safety regulations, particularly regarding snow plow operations. It is illegal to pass snow plows when multiple lanes are being cleared, and drivers are encouraged to stay clear of these vehicles for their safety and the safety of others.

As the winter weather system progresses, residents are advised to remain informed about changing conditions and to take necessary precautions while traveling.
