University of Manitoba Explores Genetic Testing for Mental Health Meds

A research team at the University of Manitoba is launching a study that aims to enhance mental health treatment by utilizing genetic testing. The initiative seeks to recruit individuals who are looking for effective medication options for mental health issues, potentially eliminating the uncertainty often associated with selecting the right treatment.

The study will provide free pharmacogenomic testing to 200 adults who are preparing to start or switch their mental health medications. This testing predicts how individuals might react to various medications based on their genetic profiles. Lead investigator Dr. Abdullah Maruf, an assistant professor at the university’s College of Pharmacy, emphasized the challenges many face: “Someone with mental-health conditions tries multiple medications, and sometimes it takes months or years to find effective options or to minimize side effects.”

Pharmacogenomic testing is not widely accessible through the public health system in Canada. Currently, individuals seeking such tests in Manitoba face out-of-pocket costs of approximately $500, with limited coverage through private insurance. Researchers involved in the study hope their work will pave the way for increased accessibility to this valuable resource.

The potential benefits of this research extend beyond individual patients. Dr. Jitender Sareen, head of psychiatry at the Max Rady College of Medicine, referenced a 2023 study in British Columbia that suggested widespread genetic testing for patients with depression could save the province up to $1 billion in healthcare costs over the next two decades. By narrowing down medication options from over 40 to between five and ten, the testing could streamline treatment significantly.

“It’s a cost-effective intervention,” Dr. Sareen noted. “Our efforts are really to impact policy, to say, ‘Look, this is a small cost to the system to do this test.’ We’re trying to continue to make this more available in inpatient and outpatient settings.” By improving the precision of treatment plans, researchers aim to reduce the time it takes for patients to find effective medication, thus preventing prolonged suffering and potential hospitalizations.

The Manitoba Health Minister, Uzoma Asagwara, acknowledged the importance of the research but stated that any new additions to the public health system would require a thorough assessment. “We appreciate the efforts of Manitoba researchers and look forward to reviewing the study results once they are available,” Asagwara said.

Funding for the study includes $70,000 from the Health Sciences Centre Foundation and an additional $50,000 from the University of Manitoba’s psychiatry department, aimed at supporting the recruitment of patients through 2027. While the current goal is to test 200 patients, Dr. Maruf expressed hopes for extending the funding to accommodate more participants and investigate the potential for genetic testing to reduce hospital stays in Manitoba.

Individuals interested in participating in the study must be referred by a physician. Eligible patients will complete a survey and provide a saliva sample to facilitate the pharmacogenomic testing process. The implications of this research are significant, particularly given that more than one in four adults in Manitoba report experiencing a mental illness, highlighting the urgent need for effective treatment solutions.
