Fans Riot at Kolkata Stadium After Messi Leaves Early
Tensions erupted at a stadium in Kolkata, India, as fans reacted violently after football icon Lionel Messi departed unexpectedly during his much-anticipated visit. The incident occurred on March 9, 2024, as thousands gathered to witness the Argentine superstar’s appearance as part of his three-day tour, branded the GOAT Tour.
Messi, 38, arrived in West Bengal to enthusiastic cheers from fans who had flocked to see him. However, as he left the Salt Lake Stadium earlier than expected, frustration boiled over among the crowd. Many had paid over $100 for tickets and were eager to catch a glimpse of the football legend. Reports indicate that spectators broke through barricades, stormed the pitch, and vandalized property in a chaotic outburst.
Witnesses described a scene of devastation as fans, donning Messi jerseys and waving Argentine flags, reacted to heavy security measures that limited their access to the star. “For me, to watch Messi is a pleasure, a dream. But I have missed the chance to have a glimpse because of the mismanagement in the stadium,” said Nabin Chatterjee, a businessman, in an interview with AFP.
Just before the chaos unfolded, Messi unveiled a striking 21-metre (70-foot) statue of himself holding the World Cup. He was also expected to participate in a short exhibition match. However, the early departure sparked outrage, with fans expressing their disappointment. One fan, Ajay Shah, voiced his frustration, stating, “I paid Rs 5,000 ($55) for the ticket and came with my son to watch Messi, not politicians. The police and military personnel were taking selfies, and the management is to blame.”
The situation prompted a swift response from local authorities. West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock and concern over the incident. “I sincerely apologize to Lionel Messi, as well as to all sports lovers and his fans, for the unfortunate incident,” she said in a post on X, indicating that she had initiated an investigation into the matter.
As part of his tour, Messi is scheduled to visit major cities including Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. His itinerary also includes a potential meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This visit comes on the heels of Messi winning his second consecutive Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player award after leading Inter Miami to the MLS title and finishing as the league’s top scorer. As he prepares to defend Argentina’s title at the upcoming World Cup in June and July 2024 in North America, this incident may overshadow what was intended to be a celebration of football and sportsmanship.
In light of the turmoil, many fans are left reflecting on their fervent hopes to see their idol, now complicated by the day’s events. With the incident drawing international attention, the focus remains on how the local authorities will address the fallout from this chaotic scene.
