Flash Flood Devastates Moroccan Town, Claims 37 Lives
A flash flood in the coastal town of Safi, Morocco, has resulted in the deaths of at least 37 individuals, according to local officials. The disaster, which struck on March 3, 2024, has prompted extensive search and rescue operations. This incident marks the deadliest flooding event in the region in over a decade, as the country grapples with severe drought conditions.
The sudden surge of water transformed streets into muddy torrents, sweeping away vehicles and debris. Safi, located approximately 300 kilometres south of the capital, Rabat, is now facing a significant humanitarian crisis. Fourteen survivors are currently receiving treatment at Mohammed V Hospital, with two individuals in critical condition.
In response to the flooding, local schools have been closed for a minimum of three days. The aftermath of the flood has left streets choked with mud and wreckage. One victim, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed her despair: “I’ve lost all my clothes. Only my neighbour gave me some to cover myself. I have nothing left. I’ve lost everything.”
At least 70 homes and businesses in the historic town centre were inundated. Shopkeeper Abdelkader Mezraoui lamented the destruction of the local retail economy, stating, “Jewelry store owners have lost all their stock… and the same goes for clothing store owners.” He urged for official compensation to help rebuild affected businesses.
The psychological impact of the disaster is profound. Rescuer Azzedine Kattane noted the strong emotional toll on the community, emphasizing the tragedy’s reach due to the high number of victims. As floodwaters receded, they left behind a grim scene of mud and overturned vehicles, with Civil Protection units and local residents working diligently to clear the area.
Morocco is currently enduring its seventh consecutive year of severe drought, with 2023 being recorded as the hottest year in the nation’s history. The effects of climate change have intensified weather patterns, increasing the severity of storms and flooding. In the past, flash floods have resulted in hundreds of fatalities in Morocco, notably in 1995 and 2002.
The situation in Safi underscores the urgent need for effective disaster response and long-term strategies to address the increasing challenges posed by climate change. As the community begins to recover, the focus will turn to rebuilding and supporting those who have lost so much.
