DeKalb School District Invests in 1,700 New Chromebooks

DeKalb School District 428 has approved the purchase of 1,700 new Chromebooks for the upcoming school year, aimed at supporting incoming students in first, fifth, and ninth grades. This decision, made during a recent school board meeting, also includes replacement devices for staff. The total investment is projected to be around $901,850, according to district documents.

The district’s director of technology, Ben Bayle, expressed enthusiasm about the financial savings associated with this acquisition. The cost per device has decreased by $8.50 compared to last year, leading to an overall savings of approximately $14,450. Each Chromebook will come equipped with a four-year unlimited accidental warranty, a Google Management license, content filtering, and a durable hardshell case, ensuring devices are well-protected and functional for educational use.

Commitment to Educational Equity

The initiative to provide Chromebooks has been in place for over a decade, with the district first introducing these devices to enhance the teaching and learning experience. This technology rollout is part of a broader effort to address equity gaps among students, ensuring that all learners have access to the necessary tools for success in the digital age.

Bayle highlighted the importance of timely action regarding the purchase. If the district delays the request past January 1, 2026, they could face an additional 15% increase in costs, pushing the total above $1 million. “I really don’t want to do that,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for swift decision-making to secure the best pricing.

To manage costs efficiently, the district has implemented a refurbishment program for devices once students graduate from high school. Bayle noted that broken devices are repaired quickly and returned to a pool for temporary use throughout the district. This strategy not only saves money but also extends the lifespan of the devices, which typically ranges from five to six years.

Community Support and Acknowledgment

During the meeting, Board Vice President Jose Jaques expressed appreciation for Bayle’s efforts in overseeing the procurement process. “I want to thank you for staying on top of this and saving us,” Jaques said, acknowledging the importance of fiscal responsibility in educational spending.

The district anticipates the delivery of the new Chromebooks by July 1, 2026, allowing ample time for setup and distribution before the new school year commences.
