Trump-Kennedy Center Name Change Sparks Controversy in D.C.

The board appointed by former U.S. President Donald Trump voted on December 7, 2023, to rename the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as the Trump-Kennedy Center. This decision, announced by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, has drawn swift criticism from various quarters, particularly from Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader of the House, who stated that the board lacks the authority to enact such changes without legislative backing.

Leavitt praised the decision as recognition of the “unbelievable work” Trump has accomplished in revitalizing the center both financially and in terms of its reputation. Trump, who serves as the board chairman, expressed his surprise and honor at the vote, describing the board as comprised of “the most distinguished people in the country.”

Jeffries, an ex officio member of the board due to his congressional role, made it clear that the board’s authority does not extend to renaming the center. “We’re going to make that clear,” he told reporters, emphasizing the need for legislative action to support any such changes.

Trump has often referred to the Kennedy Center as the “Trump Kennedy Center,” a phrase he used again recently when discussing a major event scheduled for the venue. His comments prompted laughter from the audience, indicating a mix of humor and disbelief.

The potential name change has sparked backlash from members of the Kennedy family. Maria Shriver, a niece of John F. Kennedy, described the proposal to rename the center as the Donald J. Trump Center for the Performing Arts as “insane” and “ridiculous.” In a social media post, she voiced her frustration, questioning the motivation behind such actions and labeling them as “petty” and “small-minded.”

This controversy follows Trump’s earlier modifications to the Kennedy-era Rose Garden at the White House, which he transformed into a patio by replacing the lawn with paving stones. Additionally, another Kennedy family member, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., currently serves as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Trump’s Cabinet.

Trump’s involvement with the Kennedy Center has intensified since he assumed office again in January 2023. He has replaced board members appointed by previous Democratic presidents with loyal supporters, leading to his election as board chairman. Despite his previous indifference towards the center, he has now criticized its programming and appearance, vowing to initiate significant changes.

To facilitate renovations, Trump secured over $250 million from the Republican-controlled Congress, which has raised concerns about the center’s future. Reports indicate that attendance for events has declined since Trump took charge, with productions such as Hamilton cancelling planned runs. Empty seats have been frequently observed during performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, sparking worries about the center’s viability.

The Kennedy Center remains a vital institution in the U.S. arts landscape. As the controversy surrounding its name persists, many are watching closely to see how these developments will unfold and impact the performing arts community. The awards program, including the Kennedy Center Honors, is set to be broadcast on CBS and Paramount+ on December 23, 2023.
