Carney Appoints Mark Wiseman as New Canadian Ambassador to U.S.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed global investment banker Mark Wiseman as Canada’s next ambassador to the United States. Wiseman is a longtime friend of Carney and was one of the early contributors to Carney’s leadership campaign, donating $1,750 to his bid and an additional $1,750 to the Liberal Party during the election campaign in April 2025.

Transition and Focus on Trade Relations

Wiseman will take over the ambassadorial position from Kirsten Hillman, who recently announced her departure. Hillman stated that a new team would be better suited to tackle the upcoming review of the trade agreement, which is set to be a critical issue in the next year. The Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement has been a cornerstone of North American trade relations, and Wiseman’s experience is expected to play a pivotal role in navigating this complex landscape.

Wiseman is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Canada-U.S. Relations. This council was initially established by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just before the inauguration of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Although Wiseman was not originally included in the council under Trudeau, Carney appointed him shortly after taking office in March 2025.
