SD27 School Board Considers Major Changes to Meeting Format
The Board of Education for School District 27 (SD27) is contemplating significant changes to its meeting procedures, which may include transitioning to online formats. Chair Angie Delainey shared these potential changes in a memo ahead of the board’s last meeting of 2023, scheduled for December 15.
Proposed Changes to Enhance Engagement
Among the suggestions outlined in Delainey’s memo is the requirement for attendees to submit questions prior to meetings. This shift aims to streamline discussions and ensure all voices are heard. Delainey emphasized that the purpose of the memo is to inform the community about the considerations and to invite feedback. “We put that out with the intention to gather feedback through [email protected] or for the public to reach out to their zone trustee,” she stated. Early responses have been positive.
Another proposed change involves closing the public gallery during discussions. Delainey expressed concerns about disruptive elements such as unexpected questions or interruptions that could hinder effective communication. “If a special interest group takes up all the time for questions, then other members of the public may be left without an opportunity to speak,” she noted.
By requiring questions to be submitted by 2 p.m. on the day of the meeting, Delainey believes the board can provide comprehensive answers and foster a more inclusive environment. “I had a really great talk with the ex-board chair, Will Van Osch, who informed me that the procedural bylaw previously mandated written questions,” she added.
Safety and Accessibility Considerations
Delainey also highlighted safety issues as a reason for potentially moving to virtual meetings. Many trustees reside outside the immediate area of Williams Lake and face challenges driving at night during winter conditions. She shared her personal discomfort with nighttime driving, reinforcing the need for a safer meeting format.
Throughout the holiday season, Delainey and her fellow board members will review the procedural bylaws and meeting practices from ten other school districts across Canada. This research aims to identify successful strategies that could be beneficial for SD27. On January 26, 2026, the board will reconvene to evaluate public feedback and explore the viability of the proposed changes.
If any modifications are approved, they are expected to be implemented by February 2026. Delainey has encouraged community members to share their thoughts, reiterating that “nothing is set in stone.” Feedback can be provided through direct communication with local trustees or via the board’s email.
As the board strives to enhance public engagement and communication, these proposed changes reflect a commitment to adapting to the needs of the community while ensuring that all voices are considered in the decision-making process.
