Man Sought in Oshawa Murder Linked to Peterborough Killing

A man wanted in connection with a fatal stabbing in Oshawa is also being sought for a murder that occurred earlier this month in Peterborough. On March 5, 2024, at approximately 04:15, officers from the Durham Regional Police responded to reports of a man found on the roadway near Park Rd. S. and John St. in Oshawa. The victim, identified as Jeremy Russell, 44, suffered multiple stab wounds and was transported to a trauma center in the Toronto area, where he later succumbed to his injuries. This incident marks the ninth homicide in Durham region for the year.

Following the incident, police charged Nicholas Robbins, 33, of Oshawa, with second-degree murder. Authorities have also issued a warrant for Michael Waterman, 44, of Peterborough, who is wanted for the same charge. Investigators noted that all three men involved are known to each other.

Waterman has been evading law enforcement since being named as one of the suspects in a homicide that took place on December 6, 2023, in Peterborough. On that day, police were called to an apartment building at 212 Brock St., where they discovered a 33-year-old man with severe head injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In connection with the December case, police executed a warrant on December 18, leading to the arrest of Peter Pople, 28, also of Peterborough, who was charged with second-degree murder. On the same day, Kaya Coughlin, 29, of Peterborough, was arrested at Trinity Community Centre and charged with manslaughter. Additionally, Dominick Rivers, 32, of Peterborough, was charged with accessory after the fact to murder, failure to comply with probation, and six counts of operation while prohibited.

Due to the nature of the charges, police have classified Waterman as armed and dangerous. They advise the public not to approach him and to contact emergency services immediately if he is spotted. Investigators also urge Waterman to seek legal counsel and surrender to authorities.
