Kingston Fire & Rescue has joined forces with fire departments across Canada to support eleven-year-old Ben Thomas, who is bravely battling cancer for the second time. Having first overcome a Wilms tumor in his left kidney at the age of five, Ben is now facing a new challenge as the disease has returned, this time affecting his right lung.

The initiative, visible on the Team Benny Facebook page, aims to show solidarity with Ben as he undergoes treatment. Firefighters and communities from various regions are participating by sending challenge coins and department merchandise, creating a massive social media movement rallying behind the courageous boy.

In a statement, Kingston Fire & Rescue expressed their commitment to this cause, saying, “We first heard about the story and felt it was an awesome cause to help out a child going into cancer treatment a second time. We felt honoured to be nominated and participate.” Kingston Fire & Rescue has challenged the fire departments of Niagara Falls and Sarnia. They are also sending a custom letter, a challenge coin, a plush toy, and some Kingston Fire & Rescue merchandise to Ben.

During a video message delivered by Michael Laughlin on December 17, he encouraged Ben, stating, “You’ve got this. Just remember, never give up, never give in. Keep fighting no matter what.” Laughlin also nominated Sarnia Fire Rescue and Niagara Falls Fire Department to join the challenge.

Ben’s mother, Erica Thomas, initially did not start this challenge. It began when Ben received some challenge coins from the RCMP and expressed a desire to collect more. Erica posted on social media, and the response was overwhelming. “It kind of exploded from there,” she said. The first department to film a video and issue a challenge was from Ottawa.

As the outreach expanded, Erica began sharing videos of Ben opening each package he received. He has been thrilled to discover gifts from numerous locations, including Armenia, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and France. “I’m really excited when I get these packages because it just brings a smile to my face every day,” Ben shared. He expressed delight in seeing the letters and learning about their origins, noting the “pretty crazy” journey they made to reach him.

While he cannot pick a favorite challenge coin, Ben appreciates their intricate designs. He mentioned the “detail and precision” involved in their creation, along with other items he has received, such as fire helmets.

Erica Thomas described the outpouring of support as “incredibly heartwarming.” She expressed gratitude towards those who have rallied behind Ben, even if they do not know him personally. “People can be super kind, generous, and giving. What I’m finding most incredible is how much people are finding inspiration from Ben,” she noted.

Although some days are more challenging than others, Erica feels the outreach gives Ben something to look forward to daily. The support has also led to unique experiences, including tours of local fire stations. “Today, we have the commanding officer for K-division for our area coming to visit Ben and bring him some stuff,” she added.

As Ben continues his chemotherapy treatments, which are expected to last until the end of March, the community remains steadfast in their support. With the hope of transitioning to radiation afterward, the effort to uplift this young boy during his difficult journey is a powerful testament to the kindness and solidarity found within communities.
