iPhone Users Report Rare Battery Swelling During Flights
Several users of newer iPhone models have reported a rare issue of battery swelling that occurs specifically during flights. These incidents have raised questions about the manufacturing quality and reliability of the devices, particularly as users describe their batteries expanding mid-flight and returning to normal once the aircraft lands.
Reports have surfaced from various iPhone users experiencing similar concerning symptoms. One notable case involves an owner of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, who noted that their device’s battery swelled while in the air, causing the back panel to separate from the body of the phone. Remarkably, the battery returned to its original form as soon as the plane touched down. Another user with an iPhone 15 experienced the same swelling phenomenon during two different flights. To mitigate potential future issues, this user opted for a battery replacement, which successfully resolved the matter.
Possible Causes of Battery Swelling
The swelling incidents have led to speculation about how changes in cabin pressure might affect lithium-ion batteries found in newer iPhone models. Older aircraft may struggle to maintain consistent pressure, potentially exacerbating the issue. While Apple has not yet released an official statement regarding these occurrences, experts suggest that trapped gas within lithium-ion batteries could be a contributing factor.
Under normal atmospheric conditions, gas within the battery remains compressed and undetectable. However, at cruising altitude, the reduced pressure in the cabin might allow this gas to expand, resulting in temporary swelling. Once the aircraft descends and normal pressure is restored, the batteries appear to revert to their original shape. It is important to note that this issue seems to affect only a limited number of newer iPhone models.
Users experiencing this problem are encouraged to document their cases, as doing so may facilitate a battery replacement through Apple. As conversations surrounding the quality control of these devices continue, consumers remain vigilant about their experiences with potential battery issues.
As more reports come to light, it is essential for iPhone users to stay informed about the performance and safety of their devices, especially during air travel.
