Enhance Your Driving Skills: Recognize and Change Bad Habits
Driving is often viewed merely as a means of transportation, yet it is a skill that can be refined and improved. Many drivers unconsciously develop bad habits over time, which can jeopardize safety on the road. Recognizing these habits is crucial, as they can become ingrained unless addressed. Even if one considers themselves a competent driver, there is always room for improvement.
Self-awareness is key in identifying poor driving practices. During routine trips, drivers should check in with themselves mentally to evaluate their behavior. Common indicators of bad habits include:
– Driving on autopilot without recalling recent moments
– Frequently braking late or abruptly
– Tailgating other vehicles
– Committing rolling stops or inconsistent signaling
– Experiencing feelings of impatience or annoyance towards fellow drivers
– Exceeding the speed limit without realizing it
If a driver notices that a particular behavior occurs repeatedly, it is an indication of a habit rather than a one-off mistake. Relying solely on self-perception can be insufficient. It is advisable to utilize external feedback when possible. For instance, asking a trusted passenger for observations can provide valuable insights. Additionally, reviewing dashcam footage, if available, can highlight areas for improvement.
Recognizing patterns is more significant than focusing on isolated incidents. Bad driving habits often stem from factors such as inattention, overconfidence, time constraints, or emotional states. Understanding the root cause of a habit can facilitate change.
Merely attempting to eliminate a bad habit without substituting it with a positive behavior can lead to persistent issues. For example, if a driver regularly forgets to signal, the goal should be to consistently signal before any lateral movement. Tying corrections to specific triggers can help reinforce positive changes. If speed control is an issue, checking speed against posted limits every time a driver passes a sign can convert conscious efforts into automatic behaviors.
After each drive, it is beneficial to reflect on the experience. Taking just thirty seconds to assess whether the drive went well or to identify any errors enhances awareness and encourages progress. All drivers can also benefit from revisiting defensive driving principles or participating in refresher courses. Experience alone does not prevent bad driving habits; intentional practice is essential for improvement.
The signs of progress in driving include:
– Feeling calmer and more in control during drives
– Anticipating potential hazards more effectively
– Being less affected by the mistakes of other drivers
– Experiencing reduced feelings of being rushed behind the wheel
– Noticing a decrease in near-misses over time
The most skilled drivers are not infallible; they are self-aware, reflective, and proactive about their driving. By treating driving habits as a system to monitor and refine, drivers can naturally enhance their skills.
Tim Schewe, a retired constable with extensive experience in traffic law enforcement, emphasizes the importance of this self-reflective practice. For further information or to share insights, please visit DriveSmartBC.
