Technical Details and Limitations

While the feature is expanding, there are some limitations to consider. Emoji reactions are optimized for use through the official Gmail apps available on Android and iOS, as well as via the web interface at Gmail.com. However, users cannot send reactions in specific scenarios, such as when receiving emails through a Google Group alias or when dealing with large mailing lists. In these instances, traditional reply methods will still apply.

For organizations that prefer a more conventional email approach, Google is allowing Workspace administrators to disable the emoji reaction feature at any time via the Admin console. If an organization had previously opted out of this feature during the trial period, Google will honor that decision and not automatically enable it when the default setting is activated in February. Administrators are encouraged to review the End User Access section of their Gmail settings before the cutoff date to maintain their preferred settings.
