Windsor’s newly reconstructed intersection at Sydney Avenue, connecting Howard Avenue and Division Road, officially opened on October 3, 2023. This completion marks the end of a significant construction project that has been in the works since April 2023, aimed at improving traffic flow and public safety in the area.

Community Response and Project Overview

Ward 9 councillor Kieran McKenzie expressed his satisfaction with the project’s completion. He noted that the intersection had posed challenges due to heavy traffic, particularly near the busy Devonshire Mall. “It really fixes one of the more challenging intersections that we had at South Cameron and Howard Avenue,” McKenzie stated. He emphasized the importance of the project in boosting public safety and facilitating smoother traffic movement.

The project faced various hurdles during its execution. Last month, Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens announced that while the city’s work was complete, they were awaiting the Canadian National Railway to finalize the commissioning of the rail crossing. With the road now reopened, McKenzie pointed out that the community had shown remarkable patience throughout the construction process.

“There were a few challenges in terms of getting to this point, but we’re past all of that now,” McKenzie remarked, highlighting the intersection’s complexity. He explained that the rail line posed difficulties for vehicles navigating the surface grade crossing, compounded by the intersection’s proximity to two major roadways, Howard Avenue and Provincial Road.

Financial Investment and Future Expectations

The reconstruction project, costing approximately $18 million, resulted in significant traffic impacts, including lane restrictions on both Howard Avenue and Division Road until October 2023. McKenzie expressed optimism about the future, stating, “I think the community is going to be safer, and traffic is going to flow a little bit more freely as a direct consequence of this investment.”

As the new intersection officially opens, residents can expect improved traffic conditions and enhanced safety measures, fulfilling a long-awaited need in Windsor’s transportation infrastructure. This project not only signifies a notable investment in local infrastructure but also reflects a commitment to addressing community needs and challenges.
