Langley School District Engages Parents on New School Boundaries

Langley School District is actively engaging parents through information sessions regarding anticipated changes to school catchment boundaries. These changes are expected to take effect with the opening of a new middle and secondary school in the fall of 2027. The new facilities, currently under construction in the Smith neighbourhood, located near the 212 Street Connector and 76 Avenue, will create approximately 2,800 new student spaces.

Currently, the Willoughby area accommodates two middle schools, Peter Ewart and Yorkson Creek, along with one high school, R.E. Mountain Secondary. According to a recent announcement from the district, the forthcoming changes to the catchment boundaries could affect current and future students attending both middle and secondary schools. The district stated, “The catchment boundary changes will also impact transition plans for elementary feeder schools.”

The series of public information sessions aims to inform parents about the process and timelines involved in these changes while also collecting preliminary feedback. Notably, no specific boundary proposals will be presented during this initial round of meetings.

Information Session Schedule

The first meetings have already commenced, with Yorkson Creek hosting its session on January 8, 2024 and Peter Ewart following on January 12, 2024. Upcoming sessions include:

Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary School on January 13, 2024
R.E. Mountain Secondary School on January 29, 2024
Richard Bulpitt Elementary School on February 4, 2024

All meetings are scheduled to begin at 18:30 and will last approximately one hour. The district plans to record the presentations, making them accessible online for those unable to attend.

Parents and community members with questions, concerns, or comments about the information sessions or the catchment boundary process are encouraged to reach out via email at [email protected]. This initiative marks an important step in shaping the educational landscape for families in the Langley area as they prepare for the opening of the new schools.
