Notre-Dame-du-Sault, G.G.S. Triumph at Algoma Robotics Competition

Notre-Dame-du-Sault and St. Joseph Island Central Public School emerged victorious at Saturday’s elementary robotics competition organized by the Algoma District School Board. The event took place at Boreal French Immersion Public School and featured a remarkable increase in participation, with 39 teams competing, up from 24 in 2025. Approximately 150 students from 14 schools, spanning from Goulais River to Blind River, showcased their skills in robotics.

The competition marked a significant milestone for several schools, including Ben R. McMullin Public School and St. Joseph Island Central Public School, who were participating for the first time. The event not only highlighted the growing interest in robotics among elementary students but also fostered a spirit of innovation and collaboration.

Several awards were presented during the competition. The Excellence Award in the elementary division went to M&M from Notre-Dame-du-Sault, while the middle school division’s award was claimed by the Hot Bots from Korah Intermediate. Other notable achievements included the Design Award for the Robo Toasters and the Amaze Award for Revy, both from Korah Intermediate.

The competition’s Build Award was awarded to the Dancing Monkeys from Blind River Public School, while the Create Award went to Fruit Loop from Boreal French Immersion. The Judges’ Award was given to CAES-A from Central Algoma Elementary School, and the Skills Champion title was claimed by the Mustang Seniors from Mountain View Public School.

The ultimate winners of the tournament were The Unknowns from Notre-Dame-du-Sault and G.G.S. from St. Joseph Island Central Public School. These teams will advance to the next level of competition, scheduled for February 21, 2024, in Brampton. Other teams progressing to this stage include Hot Bots, Greeny from Boreal French Immersion Public School, Dancing Monkeys, The Unknowns, and M&M.

In addition, teams from Korah Collegiate and Vocational School, St. Mary’s College, Central Algoma Secondary School, and W.C. Eaket participated in a separate VEX Robotics Provincial Qualifier at Cambrian College in Sudbury. Notably, Korah’s Double Double advanced to the finals of the playoff rounds, further solidifying the competitive spirit of the region.

Six of the eight teams representing Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma finished in the top ten out of 23 teams, showcasing the strength of local talent. The Wicked Weirdos from Korah received the Judges’ Award, while Double Double garnered the Innovate Award.
