Morrison’s Odell Public Library Launches E-Book and Audiobook Services
The Odell Public Library in Morrison has introduced an extensive collection of e-books and audiobooks, allowing patrons to enjoy reading from the comfort of their homes. To access this digital library, users need a device such as an iPad, Kindle, tablet, or computer, along with a valid library card. By downloading either the Libby or Palace Project app, readers can start exploring thousands of titles immediately.
Digital Access Made Easy
The Libby app, compatible with iOS and Android devices, Amazon Fire tablets, and desktop computers, simplifies the process of borrowing digital materials. Users can easily sign in with their library card, browse the library’s catalog, and manage their loans and holds. The app features intuitive navigation, allowing readers to search for specific titles or explore curated lists created by the library.
Similarly, the Palace Project app enables users to connect with the library’s e-book and audiobook collection by simply searching for Odell Public Library. Once connected, patrons can browse various titles, reserve books, and enjoy their selections with ease. Both apps enhance the accessibility of library resources, catering to the needs of modern readers.
Community Engagement and Programs
Beyond digital offerings, the Odell Public Library hosts a variety of engaging programs for all ages. The weekly Storytime event, held every Thursday evening, invites families with young children to enjoy stories, songs, and crafts together. Participants are encouraged to wear pajamas and make new friends while discovering the joys of reading.
The Lego Club meets on the first Saturday of each month, providing a creative space for builders of all ages. Attendees can utilize a diverse selection of bricks to construct their masterpieces, which are then displayed in the library until the next meeting. Additionally, the Pokémon Club gathers on the second Saturday of the month, bringing together fans to play, trade, and share knowledge about Pokémon.
Despite the excitement of new programs, the library has experienced delays in acquiring new materials due to the unexpected closure of its longtime book distributor, Baker & Taylor. Library staff are working diligently to transition to a new distributor and appreciate patrons’ patience during this period.
On November 18, 2023, the Morrison Area Chamber recognized Miss Katie, a library staff member, with the “Because Nice Matters Award” for her outstanding customer service. Such acknowledgments reflect the library’s commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for all visitors.
Upcoming Events and Resources
January offers several take-and-make crafts, including a snowman project. Patrons can also participate in a scavenger hunt for a chance to win a small prize. Regular programs such as Pinochle, Scrabble, and Chess invite community members to connect and enjoy friendly competition. The Book Club meets on the second Thursday of each month, with January’s selection being “The Library Book” by Susan Orlean.
The library also provides microgreens samples from a new mini-fridge, thanks to support from the Odell Public Library Friends. These nutrient-rich greens are available for patrons to try, offering healthy options for winter meals.
Looking ahead, the library will host “Improving Online Health Literacy” on February 10, 2024. This free program, led by faculty from Western Illinois University, aims to enhance digital health literacy for participants of all ages. Attendees will learn about digital health records and how to navigate trusted health websites.
Furthermore, a winter sowing workshop scheduled for January 17, 2024, will teach participants how to plant seeds outdoors during winter using recycled materials. Registration is required, and a nominal supply fee applies.
The Odell Public Library also offers museum and zoo passes to adult library cardholders, allowing them to explore local attractions like the Putnam Museum and Niabi Zoo at no cost.
With a wide array of programs and digital resources, the Odell Public Library continues to serve as a vital community hub, ensuring access to knowledge and fostering a love of reading among its patrons.
