A unique supply list is drawing attention at Ashton-Franklin Center High School, where agriculture teacher Mellisa McMillan is seeking funding for specialized equipment. McMillan’s list goes beyond traditional items like pens and pencils, including essential tools such as welding gloves, welding tongs, and new saws for the woodshop. With approximately 85 students enrolled in her agriculture classes this semester, McMillan aims to enhance their learning experience through practical supplies.

Earlier this year, McMillan successfully applied for a grant totaling $4,500 from the agriculture education grant program managed by the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce (SVACC). She plans to utilize these funds to acquire the specialized tools and equipment needed for her diverse curriculum, which ranges from plant science and horticulture to welding and construction. “An ag department is such a different animal when it comes to the supplies we need and use,” said McMillan, emphasizing the importance of having the right resources for her students.

Supporting Agriculture Education in the Region

The agriculture education grant program is part of the SVACC’s broader efforts to strengthen agriculture and vocational learning in the area. According to Dallas Knack, executive director of the SVACC, the organization raises funds for various educational programs, including local Future Farmers of America (FFA), 4-H programs, and the University of Illinois Extension. The primary fundraiser for these initiatives is the annual Steak Fry in the Country event, held every August, which allocates funds towards workforce development and scholarship programs.

The SVACC Agribusiness Committee, comprising ten members from various sectors, collaborates closely with local educational institutions to promote agriculture education. The committee’s initiatives aim to ensure students receive the necessary support and resources to thrive in their studies. “We have representatives from Extension, FFA, 4-H, ag lenders, insurance, and agribusiness, as well as from Sauk Valley Community College,” Knack noted.

In addition to the grant program, the SVACC and the Whiteside Area Career Center’s CEO program are finalizing preparations for their annual meeting and dinner. Scheduled for January 29, 2025, at the McCormick Center in Rock Falls, this event offers members an opportunity to reflect on the organization’s achievements in 2024 and set goals for the upcoming year. The theme for this year’s gathering is “Dinner Undercover,” with activities planned by students from the CEO program.

Recognizing Emerging Leaders

The annual meeting also serves as the SVACC’s awards night, where several accolades will be presented, including the Chamber Champion and Ambassador of the Year awards. Notably, the Sauk Valley Under 40 initiative will present its first-ever emerging leader award, highlighting the commitment to recognizing young talent in the region. The event is exclusive to SVACC members, with a ticket purchase deadline of January 20, 2025. Tickets can be obtained at the SVACC office in Sterling or by calling 815-625-2400.

Through these initiatives, McMillan and the SVACC demonstrate a strong commitment to enhancing agriculture education. The funds and resources provided not only help equip classrooms but also inspire students to pursue their interests in agriculture, ensuring they have the tools necessary for success in their future careers.
