Red Deer Public Schools Allocates $3.1 Million for Upgrades

Red Deer Public Schools will utilize $3.1 million in provincial funding to implement significant upgrades across several schools in the district. The investment is part of a broader facility maintenance strategy for the 2025-26 school year, aimed at enhancing infrastructure and ensuring safe learning environments.

As part of this initiative, Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School will receive $1 million for necessary roof repairs. In addition, Eastview Middle School will benefit from $312,500 allocated for similar roof upgrades. These projects are funded through two provincial programs: the Infrastructure Maintenance and Renewal program, which contributes $1.4 million, and the Capital Maintenance and Renewal program, providing an additional $1.7 million for the upcoming school year.

The public school board approved the comprehensive maintenance and repair project list last week, detailing over 40 projects across nearly two dozen schools in the Red Deer area. This extensive effort is designed to address various needs, with much of the work scheduled for the summer months to minimize disruption to students and staff during the academic year.

Additional funding will support a range of projects, including $225,000 for new heat pumps at Lindsay Thurber, $60,000 for classroom upgrades, and $50,000 for the installation of a new security vestibule. Other schools will also see improvements: $300,000 will go to Gateway Christian School for a heat pump replacement and roof repairs, while $75,000 will be allocated for millwork upgrades in the Foods Room at Glendale Sciences and Technology School.

West Park Elementary School will undergo library renovations costing $60,000, and $44,000 has been earmarked for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning upgrades at Aspen Heights Elementary School. Additionally, $40,000 will be used to reconfigure the main entrance at both G.W. Smith Elementary School and Mattie McCullough Elementary School.

Planning for these facility improvements begins each fall, with consultations involving school principals to identify priority areas. The collaborative approach ensures that the most pressing needs of the schools are met effectively. This proactive strategy highlights Red Deer Public Schools’ commitment to maintaining and enhancing educational facilities for its students and staff.
