Man Charged in Assault on Senior; Trio Arrested After Pursuit
A 48-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault following an unprovoked attack that has left a senior citizen in critical condition. According to Hamilton Police, the incident occurred on March 15, 2024, at approximately 16:00 in a building on King St. W. The victim, a 67-year-old male, was discovered unconscious by security personnel and was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he remains intubated and critically injured.
Investigators allege that the suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, struck the victim unexpectedly with a closed fist. The blow caused the victim to fall and lose consciousness. The accused was apprehended nearby and taken into custody without any further incident. He also faces eight additional charges related to prior probation violations. Three Youths Arrested After Vehicle Pursuit
In a separate incident, three male youths have been charged following a police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle in Whitby. On the morning of March 15, 2024, at around 08:45, officers from Durham Regional Police observed a Honda SUV, reported stolen, in the vicinity of Twin Streams Dr. and Country Lane. When police attempted to block the vehicle, it fled the scene, colliding with a police cruiser and subsequently crashing into a tree.
The suspects attempted to escape on foot but were apprehended thanks to coordinated efforts involving a remotely piloted aircraft, the K9 Unit, and tactical support. One of the arrested youths is linked to a robbery at Peoples Jewellers in the Shops at Pickering City Centre that took place the previous Thursday, as well as an attempted robbery at Oshawa Jewellery.
A 16-year-old male from Whitby faces 12 charges, including armed robbery and failing to stop for police, while a 14-year-old and another 16-year-old from the same area face charges for possession of property obtained by crime and disguise with intent. Armed Robbery at Cannabis Store
Furthermore, a 31-year-old man from Oshawa has been charged with eight offenses stemming from an armed robbery at a cannabis retail store. On March 14, 2024, around 11:50, Durham Regional Police responded to a robbery at True North Cannabis Co. on Cedar St. The suspect reportedly entered the store, brandishing a knife and demanding cash, before making off with the cash register.
Police tracked the suspect to a nearby residence where he refused to surrender. After a brief negotiation, members of the tactical support unit successfully arrested him without injuries to any store employees. Thomas Stavrou now faces charges including robbery and two weapons-related offenses. Authorities are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant footage.
Firearm Charges in Bowmanville
In another significant arrest, a 28-year-old man from Bowmanville has been charged with multiple offenses following an investigation by the Gun and Gang Unit. On March 13, 2024, police executed a search warrant at a residence in the Green Rd. and Baseline Rd. area, uncovering a handgun, three prohibited magazines, ammunition, and illicit drugs.
Nicholas Alexander Riley faces four firearm-related charges, alongside three drug-related charges for cocaine and Percocet. Additionally, he is charged with failing to comply with probation and release orders.
