The Greater Victoria community is gearing up for a unique reading initiative on January 29, 2024, as thousands of residents participate in the Great Big Buddy Read. This event invites students, families, and community members to pair up and share stories, coinciding with the provincewide celebration of Family Literacy Week in British Columbia. The initiative aims to transform the perception of reading from a solitary activity into a joyful, social experience.

Reading is often seen as a quiet endeavor, but organizers are advocating for a more interactive approach. “Screens provide content, but reading buddies provide connection,” stated Sean Rodman, literacy outreach coordinator. By promoting literacy as a community event, the initiative seeks to offer a rewarding alternative to screen time, fostering real-world connections between participants and the authors of the books.

Participants, particularly children in kindergarten through Grade 5, are encouraged to read alongside a buddy—be it an older sibling, parent, grandparent, teacher, librarian, or friend—for 20 to 30 minutes on the designated day. In addition to reading, families are invited to engage in creative activities, such as building blanket forts or dressing up as their favorite book characters.

Collaboration Across Southern Vancouver Island

This year marks a significant milestone as the event is being coordinated locally across southern Vancouver Island for the first time. Literacy organizations have united to promote participation across School Districts 61, 62, and 63. The initiative originally began in 2019 under the guidance of the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, which continues to oversee the event as a provincewide initiative.

Local partners include Story Studio, a charity dedicated to empowering youth through storytelling, and Saanich Peninsula Literacy, which focuses on enhancing literacy services and awareness in the community. Rodman expressed hope that the Buddy Read will become an annual fixture for local schools and families, emphasizing the importance and joy of shared reading experiences.

“By creating an environment where reading is a communal activity, we aim to highlight the value of literacy in our lives,” Rodman added. While schools play a central role in the initiative, families can participate from home, at libraries, or anywhere a pair of readers can gather. “It’s as simple as sitting down with a youth and reading for 20 minutes on January 29,” he emphasized. “When a child reads with a buddy, the book stops being a chore and becomes a conversation.”

Community Engagement and Opportunities

As of now, over 1,500 children from more than six schools across Greater Victoria have registered to participate in this year’s event. Participants who register online before January 30 will be entered into a prize draw for classes and groups, further incentivizing community involvement.

The message resonates beyond Greater Victoria: everyone is encouraged to grab a book, find a buddy, and read together. This initiative not only promotes literacy but also fosters a sense of community, highlighting the importance of connection in a world increasingly dominated by screens.
