Caldwell First Nation Begins Construction on 16 New Homes
Caldwell First Nation has commenced construction on 16 new homes as part of the second phase of its housing development in Leamington, Ontario. This project is set to enhance the community’s residential capacity, bringing the total number of homes on the reserve to 44. The new homes will feature a mix of two and five-bedroom units, aimed at addressing the evolving needs of local families.
This expansion marks a significant milestone for the Caldwell First Nation, symbolizing a step forward in a long journey that began over 235 years ago. The community was displaced from its ancestral lands, and this development is seen as a vital part of their efforts to reclaim and restore their heritage.
Historical Context of Land Reclamation
The Caldwell First Nation received reserve status for its 80-hectare property at Bevel Line Road and Seacliff Drive after a decade-long process, culminating in a settlement in 2010. The Nation argues that they have legitimate claims to land in the region, one dating back to 1790 when land along the north shore of Lake Erie was surrendered to the Crown. Caldwell asserts it was neither a signatory nor a beneficiary of that treaty.
The second claim arises from the War of 1812, during which Caldwell members were promised retention of land at Point Pelee in exchange for their support of the British forces. The First Nation maintains that this promise was never fulfilled, contributing to their historical grievances.
Community leaders view the new housing development as a continuation of their efforts to rebuild and restore their identity. Chief Nikki van Oirschot emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “It’s about rebuilding home, community, and continuity.” She highlighted the obligation leadership has to both current and past generations, noting that the effort reflects a commitment to the ancestors who fought for their right to a home.
Community Impact and Challenges
The recent construction follows the completion of the first phase, which saw the development of 28 homes. While the new housing is seen as a positive development, some residents have voiced concerns regarding their living conditions. Angela Duckworth, a resident of the reserve, reported issues with leaks from her hot water tank and air conditioning unit, as well as problems with drafts entering her home.
“When it rains, it comes in through the door. So the seal is not 100 percent, right,” Duckworth explained. “We’ve got cold air coming in, which means hot air is escaping.”
Duckworth is currently facing eviction due to her installation of security cameras, a matter that is under judicial review. Chief van Oirschot acknowledged that tenancy issues are handled privately, following established processes.
Despite the challenges, the construction of new homes is a vital step for the Caldwell First Nation as it works towards enhancing the quality of life for its residents. As the community continues to navigate its path towards recovery and renewal, the new housing development stands as a testament to their resilience and determination.
