Kootenay MLA Pete Davis Returns to Work After Stroke Recovery
Pete Davis, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Kootenay-Rockies, has returned to work at his Cranbrook constituency office following a month-long recovery from a stroke. Davis is now working reduced hours and has been sharing updates about his health journey on social media, demonstrating his resilience as he resumes his duties.
The incident occurred on December 27, 2023, while Davis was visiting family. He began to feel unwell, experiencing dizziness and ear discomfort. Initially opting to rest at home, he later sought medical attention at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital after his condition worsened. During his wait in the emergency department, he experienced numbness in his right arm, prompting further examination.
A CT scan revealed a blockage in the Basilar artery at the back of the brain stem. Concerned about his prognosis, Davis researched his symptoms and discovered alarming statistics, reporting an estimated 80-95 percent mortality rate. “I was reading this and thinking to myself, ‘This could be it. I could be done,’” he reflected in a recent interview.
While awaiting a helicopter transfer by STARS Air Ambulance to Calgary, he reached out to his four children, sharing heartfelt messages. Upon arrival, a subsequent CT scan indicated that collateral arteries had provided sufficient blood flow around the blockage, allowing for a more optimistic outlook. Davis spent several days in the Intensive Care Unit, receiving treatment and slowly regaining strength, despite facing mobility challenges on his right side.
After a week at the hospital, Davis returned home, initially requiring a wheelchair for mobility. His recovery has been gradual, and he is now able to walk and climb stairs. Although he continues to experience some numbness in his right leg and arm, he is adapting and documenting his journey on Facebook, where he has received substantial community support.
Davis is determined to participate in the upcoming spring session at the B.C. Legislature, which begins on February 12, 2024. Additionally, he has set his sights on the Kootenay Fun 5, an event scheduled for May 2, 2024. “I just want people to know I’m still here and I’m still 100 percent devoted to making sure I work for the people of Kootenay-Rockies,” Davis stated, emphasizing his commitment to serving his constituents.
Community members have rallied around Davis during his recovery, providing meals and assistance around the home. “It’s pretty humbling when you see a community come together and support you like that,” he expressed, highlighting the generosity he has experienced.
As he continues to recover, Davis remains focused on his responsibilities and looks forward to resuming his full duties as an MLA. His story serves as a testament to resilience and the powerful support of community in times of adversity.
