Man Faces Trial for Violent Attack on Woman in McHenry Park
A trial is set to commence on May 9, 2024, for Raymond Paul Link, a 49-year-old man accused of launching an unprovoked attack on a woman in Petersen Park, McHenry. Link faces serious charges including one count of attempted murder and six counts of aggravated battery. The incident has drawn significant attention due to its violent nature and Link’s erratic claims during previous court appearances.
According to authorities, Link was walking his unleashed dog in the park around 15:30 when he assaulted a woman who was also walking her dog. Witnesses reported that Link attacked her “completely unprovoked,” causing severe injuries. Following the initial assault, he allegedly turned on a bystander who attempted to intervene, leading to further violence. Prosecutors noted that Link commanded his dog to attack the man, who sustained a broken clavicle and other injuries.
Court records reveal that Link’s defense attorney plans to argue for a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. This strategy stems from a psychiatric evaluation indicating that Link was insane at the time of the alleged attacks. McHenry County Judge Tiffany Davis will preside over the case, as Link has waived his right to a jury trial, opting instead for a bench trial.
The charges against Link have evolved since his initial arraignment. Initially, he faced two counts of attempted murder; however, one count has since been amended to aggravated battery. Prosecutors emphasized the brutality of the attack, stating that Link “stomped, kicked and struck” the victim on her head and neck. The woman suffered multiple injuries, including lacerations and dog bites, resulting in significant blood loss.
The attack caught the attention of a 37-year-old man who was at the park with his family. Hearing the woman’s “blood-curdling scream,” he rushed to help her but was met with violence himself. Link allegedly struck him over 12 times before ordering his dog to attack, leaving the bystander bruised and injured.
Link has been detained in the McHenry County jail since his arrest. During his initial court appearance, he displayed erratic behavior, refusing to leave his cell and ultimately appearing via Zoom. In a subsequent hearing, he was physically escorted into the courtroom where he continued to make bizarre statements, claiming to be a “messenger of the heavens.” Judge Michael Chmiel attempted to manage the proceedings but faced interruptions from Link, who frequently diverted the conversation to his outlandish claims.
If Link is found not guilty by reason of insanity, he will be committed to a mental health facility rather than a prison. This potential outcome has raised questions about the implications of mental health in the legal system, particularly in cases involving violent behavior.
As the trial approaches, the community watches closely, grappling with the shocking nature of the incident and its broader implications for public safety. The case continues to unfold, and the results of the trial may influence discussions on mental health and accountability within the judicial process.
