Authorities Investigate Disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother
The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC‘s Today show host Savannah Guthrie, is being treated as a potential crime, according to authorities in Tucson, Arizona. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced on Monday that evidence at her home raised suspicions about her disappearance over the weekend.
During a press conference, Sheriff Chris Nanos elaborated on the investigation, stating that Nancy Guthrie, who has limited mobility, did not leave her residence voluntarily. “This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack,” Nanos confirmed, emphasizing her need for daily medication. He urged the community to assist in the investigation, saying, “I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls.”
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing after family members discovered she was not at a scheduled church service on Sunday morning, March 17, 2024. She was last seen at her home around 21:30 local time on Saturday. The family initiated a search for her before contacting authorities around noon on Sunday.
Search Efforts Intensify
Search efforts for Nancy Guthrie have involved drones, search dogs, and the support of volunteer groups and Border Patrol agents. The sheriff noted that the involvement of the homicide team was atypical for cases of missing persons, indicating the seriousness of the situation. “This one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene,” Nanos explained, further stating that they had found elements at the home that warranted a deeper investigation into potential foul play.
As of Monday, the search crews had been pulled back from what had shifted from a search mission to a crime scene investigation. Despite the change in focus, a sheriff’s helicopter continued to survey the area surrounding her home in the affluent Catalina Foothills.
Savannah Guthrie, who has deep roots in Tucson, expressed her gratitude for the support her family has received. In a statement reported by Today, she said, “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”
Family Background and Community Impact
Nancy Guthrie’s family history is intertwined with Tucson, where she and her family have lived since the 1970s. Savannah Guthrie, who graduated from the University of Arizona and worked as a reporter at KVOA-TV, has often highlighted the strong connections her family has with the area. In a feature aired in November 2025, Nancy spoke fondly of her love for the local wildlife, including the javelinas that occasionally visited her garden.
As the investigation unfolds, the community remains hopeful for Nancy’s safe return. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department continues to seek information from the public to aid their efforts in resolving this distressing case.
