St. Charles Celebrates Awards for $6.4M Plaza and Kautz Road Project
The city of St. Charles has received recognition for its commitment to enhancing public infrastructure through two significant projects. The downtown First Street Plaza, a centerpiece of the community, and the Kautz Road reconstruction have both been awarded the title of Public Works Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association (APWA) Fox Valley Branch.
Recognition for Community Projects
The awards highlight excellence in the management and implementation of public works initiatives. The First Street Plaza, completed in 2025, represents a $6.4 million investment, bolstered by $1.5 million in grants and private funding. This open-air plaza has quickly become a popular venue for dining and entertainment, offering a scenic view of the Fox River and a welcoming atmosphere for live music and community events.
The plaza features decorative walkways that connect local restaurants and shops, providing a vibrant gathering place for residents and visitors alike. It has hosted numerous events, allowing people to enjoy the arts and music in a relaxed environment.
The Kautz Road project, which cost $6.2 million, was a collaborative effort between St. Charles and the neighboring city of Geneva. Also completed in 2025, this project focused on replacing deteriorating pavement and improving drainage and safety. It aims to enhance regional freight transportation and connect local trails, significantly benefiting both communities.
City Leadership and Previous Honors
Peter Suhr, the city’s Public Works Director, expressed pride in the recognition, stating, “We are honored to be recognized with these awards. Projects such as the First Street Plaza and the Kautz Road Reconstruction enhance the quality of life in St. Charles while maintaining the essential infrastructure that residents, businesses, and visitors rely on.”
St. Charles has a history of accolades from the APWA, having previously received six awards for various projects. These include the Riverside Lift Station in 2025, the Seventh Avenue Creek Flood Reduction and Stream Restoration project in 2022, and the St. Charles Police Station in 2020. Earlier honors feature the Red Gate Bridge in 2013, the Riverside Water Treatment Facility in 2012, and the Municipal Center Riverwalk and Plaza Restoration in 2011.
The recent awards underscore St. Charles’ ongoing commitment to improving public infrastructure and enhancing community spaces, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a forward-thinking community.
