The Ottawa Police Service issued over 200 tickets to drivers for various violations throughout January 2024. This initiative was part of a concentrated effort to address high-risk driving behaviours on the city’s roads. The police’s Road Safety Unit, collaborating with District Traffic Units, focused on key issues such as speeding, distracted driving, and compliance with winter driving regulations.

During the first week of January, officers conducted targeted speed enforcement operations across several neighbourhoods, including Kanata, Stittsville, Findlay Creek, Manotick, Barrhaven, and Orléans. In total, 81 tickets were issued for violations, which encompassed speeding, stunt driving, driving while suspended, and seatbelt infractions. The police emphasized that these measures are crucial for enhancing road safety, particularly during the winter months.

In the second week, the police shifted focus to commercial vehicle compliance and towing enforcement, coinciding with a significant snowstorm. This resulted in 48 Provincial Offence Notices being issued, along with three criminal charges. Additionally, two vehicles were removed from service due to safety violations detected during inspections.

The third week of January saw a concerted effort against distracted driving and seatbelt use in Barrhaven and Orléans, leading to 63 tickets being issued. Notably, in Barrhaven alone, officers issued nine tickets for drivers using handheld devices while behind the wheel. This trend of enforcement continued into the last week of January, where officers issued 36 tickets, including nine for handheld device violations, as well as infractions related to red-light running during targeted enforcement initiatives.

The Ottawa Police Service remains committed to improving road safety and reducing the risks associated with high-risk driving behaviours. These enforcement blitzes serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in ensuring compliance among drivers, especially as the winter season presents unique hazards on the road. The proactive approach taken by the police is aimed at fostering safer driving habits and reducing the number of incidents caused by reckless driving.
