Anutin Charnvirakul Prepares Coalition Talks After Election Win

Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is set to engage in coalition negotiations following a significant electoral victory for his conservative Bhumjaithai Party. According to Channel 3, Bhumjaithai is projected to secure nearly 200 seats in the recent election, surpassing its competitors but falling short of an outright majority in the 500-member House of Representatives.

The progressive People’s Party is expected to finish with just above 100 seats, while the Pheu Thai party, led by jailed former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is anticipated to take third place. Pheu Thai is considered a likely coalition partner for Anutin, despite previous tensions that arose when Bhumjaithai withdrew support over a scandal related to the Cambodia border dispute.

Thaksin is currently serving a one-year prison sentence for corruption, yet many observers speculate he may be released earlier than expected as part of a political agreement. Virot Ali, a politics lecturer at Thammasat University, stated, “Thailand will move like it moved in the past three months. We will see nationalism, a strong position on Cambodia, and economic policies. Nothing changes.”
