Joliet Church’s Super Soul Bowl Sunday Celebrated for 32 Years
The annual Super Soul Bowl Sunday celebration at New Canaanland Christian Church in Joliet has been recognized as a vital community event, serving as a “beacon of hope, fellowship, and service” for over 32 years. The event took place on February 8, 2024, coinciding with the Super Bowl, and aims to connect the community through worship while incorporating festive elements.
During the celebration, attendees enjoyed singing, dancing, and a variety of prizes and food. The atmosphere was lively, with the church’s main area transformed to resemble a football field, complete with decorations that enhanced the spirit of the occasion. Many participants donned jerseys and waved colorful foam sticks, creating an engaging environment.
Rev. Lonnie Posley delivered a passionate sermon that inspired attendees to believe in their potential for change. “You got to get up and make up in your mind that you’re going to make a touchdown,” he encouraged, rallying the congregation to take charge of their lives and aspirations.
Community Recognition and Involvement
The event gained additional significance through the presence of local officials. Suzanna Ibarra, a member of the Joliet City Council, described it as the “liveliest time” she has experienced in a church setting. She read a proclamation from Joliet Mayor Terry D’Arcy that officially recognized February 8 as Super Soul Bowl Sunday. The proclamation highlighted the event’s role in bringing together residents from “all walks of life” and commending outstanding community leaders.
The proclamation stated that Super Soul Bowl Sunday “serves as a beacon of hope, fellowship, and service.” This recognition further underscores the event’s impact in fostering community spirit and cooperation.
In addition to local government support, the event also received acknowledgments from the Will County Executive’s Office and various state officials, including state Sen. Rachel Ventura and state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr.. Several candidates for elected office participated, addressing the audience and sharing their visions for the community. Notable attendees included Michelle Stiff, a Democratic candidate for Will County Clerk, Annette Parker, a Republican candidate for the same position, Holly Kim, a Democratic candidate for Illinois Comptroller, and Lisa Caparelli-Ruff, a Republican candidate for Will County regional superintendent of schools.
Voices of the Community
The event also featured speeches from leaders of local nonprofit organizations. Luther Johnson, founder and president of History On Wheels, was among those who took the stage, emphasizing the importance of community engagement.
The Super Soul Bowl Sunday celebration not only serves as a unique integration of faith and fun but also highlights the importance of community ties in Joliet. As the event continues to grow in popularity, its legacy as a source of inspiration and connection remains strong, echoing the sentiments of hope and togetherness that define the spirit of the community.
