Chris Murray Donates $1 Million to Enhance Lethbridge Cardiac Care
A significant boost to cardiac healthcare services in Lethbridge has arrived with a generous donation from local businessman Chris Murray. The owner of Murray Auto Group contributed $1 million to the Bringing Hearts Home campaign, aimed at enhancing cardiac care in the region. This contribution coincides with the centennial celebration of Murray’s family business, which has operated for 100 years and currently manages 30 dealerships across western Canada.
“We’ve always believed in giving back to the community, and with this being our 100th anniversary, it was a chance to give a larger, well, much larger than normal, contribution back to the community,” stated Murray. His family’s commitment to philanthropy is evident through their charitable foundation, which annually supports various local causes. Murray emphasized the importance of this particular initiative, noting, “It’s the one that can take this amount of money, and two, it is going to save lives.”
Approximately 18 months into the Bringing Hearts Home campaign, organizers report that they have raised around $26 million of their $30 million goal. Murray expressed confidence in the generosity of the Lethbridge community, stating he was not surprised by the campaign’s success thus far.
Dr. Sayeh Zielke, a local cardiologist and leader of the fundraising effort, remarked on the overwhelming support they have received. “When we started dreaming and planning for this campaign, we were told $30 million was incredibly ambitious, especially in the timeline that we had. This is beyond our wildest expectations,” she said.
The announcement of the donation was made near Chinkook Regional Hospital, the future site of the Cardiac Centre of Excellence. Zielke highlighted the current inadequacies of the hospital’s facilities, which she described as being used for storage rather than providing necessary care. “Heart disease is the number one killer in southern Alberta. Very sadly and concerning for us in our population, southern Alberta has about 30 percent higher mortality rate from heart disease compared to anywhere else in the province,” she noted.
The new cardiac unit is expected to transform local healthcare, allowing patients to receive critical care closer to home, which can lead to better outcomes. Zielke also emphasized that while large donations are vital, support of any magnitude helps propel the campaign toward its goal, whether through monetary contributions or volunteering at community events.
For those interested in contributing to the Bringing Hearts Home campaign, donations can be made through the website of the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation at CRHFoundation.ca.
In addition, Pattison Media’s B93.3 FM and WILD 95.5 FM will support the upcoming 16th Annual Care from the Heart Radio-a-Thon, scheduled for February 12, 2024. This event aims to further engage the community in raising funds for the cardiac care initiative.
