Mayor Celebrates Emerging Artists at Youth Arts Event in Aurora
A vibrant showcase of creativity unfolded at the Aurora Cultural Centre as the Mayor’s Celebration of Youth Arts (MCOYA) opened on March 15, 2026. The event features over 200 artworks created by more than 65 Grade 12 students from various local high schools, including Aurora High School and Cardinal Carter Catholic High School. The exhibition runs until April 19, offering a platform for young artists to share their talent with the community.
Established in 2011, MCOYA has become a hallmark event for the Aurora Cultural Centre. It has adapted through various formats over the years, including virtual displays during the pandemic. Mayor Tom Mrakas expressed his pride during the grand opening, highlighting the legacy of artistic expression that the exhibition fosters.
“Throughout those years, we’ve seen so many incredible pieces line the walls,” said Mayor Mrakas. “This year, over 200 pieces by more than 65 students will become part of that legacy.” His appreciation for the artists was clear as he reflected on their potential, stating, “It gives me great hope for the future.”
The opening reception also saw participation from local dignitaries, including Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill MPP Michael Parsa, Newmarket-Aurora MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy, and Ward 3 Councillor Wendy Gaertner. They engaged with students, recognizing the importance of arts in enriching community life.
“The truth is Aurora really is a town that values arts and culture, because we know how deeply it enriches our lives,” Mayor Mrakas continued. He encouraged students to embrace their creativity as they prepare for future opportunities. “No matter where life takes you, I hope you keep creating. Keep pushing boundaries.”
Among the event’s sponsors, Rossy Bustamente of ROCA Financial Solutions, Sun Life, shared her journey from fashion designer to financial professional. She emphasized the connection between art and finance, noting that both fields are about people and possibilities.
“Art and finance are ultimately about people. They are about identity, confidence, and possibility,” Bustamente stated. “When we support art, we support expression, confidence, and future possibilities, especially for our youth.”
This year’s featured artists include a diverse group of students, showcasing their work across various mediums. Their names include Cassandra Almeida, Gabrielle Awoyemi, Sophie Baruco, and many others, each contributing to a rich tapestry of artistic expression.
The exhibition promises to be a source of inspiration, not only for the artists but for the broader community. The Aurora Cultural Centre continues to serve as a vital space for fostering creativity and engagement, demonstrating the transformative power of the arts.
