Victoria Program Cuts Addiction Treatment Costs by 70%
A new addiction treatment initiative based in Victoria, British Columbia, is revolutionizing the way individuals access care by offering online alternatives to traditional rehabilitation. The program, known as Home Based Recovery (HBR), claims to reduce treatment costs by as much as 70% while providing essential support to those struggling with addiction.
Over the past three years, HBR has successfully delivered virtual outpatient treatment to more than 100 patients, enabling them to receive structured addiction care from the comfort of their homes. This approach allows clients to continue working and supporting their families while undergoing treatment.
Robert DeClark, the executive director of Home Based Recovery, highlighted the financial burdens associated with conventional inpatient treatment. In British Columbia, clients typically face costs ranging between $35,000 and $60,000 for a duration of six to eight weeks. DeClark noted that the significant expense and the time required away from work are major obstacles for many seeking recovery.
“By moving treatment into people’s real lives, we’ve removed much of the financial burden while keeping clinical standards high,” DeClark stated.
Innovative Program Structure
HBR’s program encompasses a comprehensive 30-day online curriculum, which is modeled after traditional inpatient treatment methods. This is complemented by individual therapy and long-term aftercare. Clients engage with daily psycho-educational content, grounding and meditation exercises, structured written tasks, and physical activity, all facilitated through an online platform. Each participant is paired with a registered therapist and can access up to 20 individual therapy sessions throughout the treatment process.
The entire treatment journey extends over seven months, incorporating six months of aftercare and recovery management following the initial program.
“By doing recovery at home, we’ve eliminated significant overhead costs and focused entirely on the core program experience,” DeClark explained.
The program is particularly aimed at individuals in the early to mid-stages of substance use disorder. This includes those who may still be working and living with their families but are beginning to experience serious consequences due to addiction.
DeClark challenged the notion that individuals must hit rock bottom to seek help, stating, “Many recognize the problem early but need more support than weekly counselling and can’t step away for inpatient treatment.”
Addressing a Range of Addictions
Home Based Recovery caters to various substance and behavioral addictions, including alcohol, cocaine, stimulants, opioids, and gambling. As reported by DeClark, alcohol use disorder continues to be the most prevalent issue among clients.
Since its inception just over three years ago, HBR has seen a retention rate of approximately 70% to 75%, with clients remaining engaged throughout the full seven-month program—a figure that is significantly high within the industry. Currently, there are 13 clients actively enrolled in the program.
While inpatient treatment remains essential for certain individuals, particularly those requiring medical detoxification, DeClark emphasized the importance of digital care in bridging critical gaps in addiction treatment.
“We’re trying to make high-quality treatment accessible to more people,” he said. “Recovery shouldn’t depend on whether someone can afford to leave their life behind.”
As the landscape of addiction treatment continues to evolve, Home Based Recovery stands as a testament to the potential of online support systems, providing an innovative pathway for those seeking help while maintaining their everyday lives.
