Saskatchewan Enhances Surgical Care with New Robotic Systems

Robotic-assisted surgeries are transforming healthcare in Saskatchewan, with nearly 500 procedures completed over the past year. A fourth robotic surgical system has recently become operational at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, enhancing the province’s capacity for minimally invasive surgeries. The introduction of the latest da Vinci Surgical System in December has already facilitated nearly 20 surgeries, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health.

The increasing use of robotic technology is evident in the distribution of procedures across the province, with 438 surgeries conducted in Saskatoon and 58 in Regina. The ministry’s report highlights a wide range of operations performed, including colorectal and hepatobiliary surgeries, as well as general procedures like hernia repairs and specialized cancer treatments.

Investment in Advanced Surgical Technology

The Saskatchewan government has made a significant commitment to expanding robotic surgical capabilities, allocating $2 million annually since 2025 for this purpose. This funding aims to enhance access to advanced surgical care across the province, ultimately benefiting more patients seeking quick recoveries.

Jeremy Cockrill, Saskatchewan’s health minister, stated, “With the continued expansion of our robot-assisted surgical program, more patients will have access to minimally invasive surgical procedures that result in quicker recoveries close to home.” This initiative underscores the province’s dedication to improving healthcare standards.

Dr. Michael Kelly, the provincial head of surgery for the Saskatchewan Health Authority, emphasized the importance of this technology, describing it as “a major advancement in surgical innovation.” He noted that robotic-assisted surgeries allow for safer, more precise operations, potentially leading to faster recovery times for patients.

Community Support and Future Prospects

The introduction of the robotic systems has also been supported by community contributions. The Royal University Hospital Foundation provided $150,000 to fund a specialized patient bed that is integral to the new surgical system. Jennifer Molloy, the foundation’s CEO, expressed gratitude to donors for their role in enhancing healthcare capabilities. “Our donors have given the RUH surgical team access to this innovative tool, and we are so grateful to them for supporting this advanced technology that raises health care standards for the people of Saskatchewan,” she stated.
