New Playground in North Bay Honors Jack Lyons’ Legacy
A new playground dedicated to the memory of Jack Lyons has opened in North Bay, providing a sensory-friendly space designed for children with disabilities. Located at One Kids Place, the updated playground features eleven new elements that enhance accessibility and inclusivity for all children. This initiative aims to support families and children in the region, particularly those affected by autism.
Jack Lyons, who was 17 years old and had autism, was a regular patient at One Kids Place until his recent passing. His father, Mark Lyons, expressed the importance of the facility to families in North Bay. “Running here on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and spending time with people that cared; and we weren’t sitting in the car, we weren’t driving to Toronto. It’s so important for our families,” he stated. The facility hosts approximately 27,000 appointments each year, with statistics indicating that one in 66 children is diagnosed with autism.
Community Support and Unique Features
The Jack Lyons Playground is specifically designed for children with autism and sensory challenges, making it the first of its kind in North Bay. Katharine Strang, who works in the development department at One Kids Place, highlighted its unique attributes. “It’s very specific to children with autism and sensory challenges, so it’s very special. It’s one of the places in the city where children with sensory challenges can come and relax, or also be stimulated and have fun,” she said.
The playground represents a significant community effort, with the hope of creating a lasting impact on families. Mark Lyons emphasized the importance of local support for the project. “The paramount is what we have now for our kids with autism. It speaks mountains about our community stepping up and supporting this all the way through,” he remarked.
A Lasting Tribute
The playground’s development began during the pandemic, and Mark Lyons expressed his pride in the final result. “I love it. I’m dying with pride,” he stated. He reminisced about Jack, who often expressed joy by saying, “best day ever,” a sentiment that resonates with the opening of this new facility.
The Jack Lyons Playground stands as a tribute not only to a beloved young man but also as a resource for children and families facing similar challenges. Its establishment reflects a broader commitment to inclusivity in the community, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to play, learn, and grow together.
